Greetings!
You can't have missed it! Between 18 and 24 November, entrepreneurs across the globe were inspired and motivated by a plethora of networking events, lectures, workshops, webinars and a whole host of other initiatives as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2013. In Rwanda, GEW attracted around 27 partners who organised around 47 events. At the African Innovation Prize, we take pride in supporting student entrepreneur clubs within our partner institutions who this year ran three exciting events to stimulate the entrepreneurial spirit among their peers, and we went along to find out more!

On 18 November, at the University of Rwanda, Huye Campus (formerly NUR), three student associations— namely Junior Chamber International NUR, NUR Students’ Association for Graduates Integrated into Private Sector and the NUR Agribusiness Association—organised a workshop entitled ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship’. This workshop was a fantastic event attended by around 90 students in which guest speakers from Kigali Farms—Rwanda's foremost mushroom experts —talked about all facets of starting your own business and got students working on solving their own business problems...Read more

Two days later, we were excited to officially launch the entrepreneurship club at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences where speakers focused on innovation and entrepreneurship in the health sector. It’s fantastic to see yet another group of enthusiastic students work together to unleash their entrepreneurial potential.

On 23 November, the entrepreneurship club at the College of Science and Technology (former KIST) organised a campus-based workshop during which students were able to interact with a panel of entrepreneurs, lecturers, and business consultants on the power of student entrepreneurship. The club chose ‘Be Your Own Boss’ as this year’s theme. The day covered diverse topics such as careful planning, finding what you’re passionate about and making an impact with your business—each and every one essential in making your way in the world of social enterprise.

AIP was honoured to support all these events and to meet & interact with these driven and passionate young people. We hope that many of these students will use some of what they have learned during Global Entrepreneurship Week to enter our business plan competition, activities for which we will be launching in early 2014. More to come on that in early 2014, so watch this space!

Finally, may we take this opportunity to thank De La Rue and the Segal Family Foundation for their continued support of African Innovation Prize’s activities which make events such as the above possible.

With thanks and kind regards

The African Innovation Prize team
